In Holland we not only have Santa, we have Sinterklaas also.

A very old habit we celebrate in the Netherlands is the birth of the Sint (or Sinterklaas) on december 5th. The old priest, No one knows his age, comes from Spain by boat and brings presents for the sweet ones. The information he needs about the receiver of the presents, do you deserve a present or do you get spanked (imaginary) with a bunch of wooden sticks, this information he has in the big secret book. He got help by man with black faces. They are not genuine black but become black because they bring the presents through the chimney. Can you imagine a priest on a horse with black helpers on a roof? Well, yes, in Holland we can…

Some weeks before dec 5th we put our (wooden) shoes next to the chimney so black Pete can throw a little present into it. Mostly a letter (character) made from chocolate or other sweets.

On Sinterklaas eve, the birthday itself, we buy presents for each other. We wrap the present as a surprise packet and write a teasy rhyme about the receiver. Funny and a little cynical mostly. The giver stays anonymous to the receiver.

So, why do I tell you all this?

Wherever you live..., If you know people who are genuine Dutch, I can guarantee you they would love to receive a typical Dutch chocolate letter and a Sint rhyme in their native language.
